The Dambulla Cave Temple is Sri Lanka’s best-preserved cave temple complex, comprising five caves whose ceilings and walls are covered in Buddhist murals spanning fifteen centuries of artistic tradition. Over 150 Buddha statues fill the cave interiors, ranging from miniature votive figures to grand reclining Buddhas carved from the living rock. Perched on a granite outcrop with views over the plains below, Dambulla is an active place of pilgrimage and worship.
